Anatomy/Physiology takes field trip to Ancilla

The Anatomy/Physiology class from Knox High School visited Ancilla College on Friday, April 23. They were given a tour of the facilities, introduced to some of the professors, and given a demonstration of the iStan simulator. Students learned that Ancilla has a lot to offer. Ancilla is a small school with a 15:1 student/teacher ratio. They offer free tutoring for their students and will pay students who are willing to tutor. Their facilities are beautiful and the professors and staff are friendly and helpful.

Students met with Dr. Fogl, who is the head of the Biology department and an anatomy instructor. He highlighted some of the abnormalities found in the dissection cats in his lab and pointed out that this is why dissection is necessary in order to learn anatomy. A demonstration of the iStan simulator by Mrs. Berndt, one of the nursing instructors, revealed that iStan is an $80,000.00, life -sized, electronic mannequin that can do about everything but walk. He is used to train nurses in the proper treatment of patients in a hospital setting. He can also be used to practice taking blood pressure, pulse, giving injections, setting up IV’s, and intubation. It was an interesting trip and well worth the time.
